Tom Aspinall Optimistic About UFC Comeback
Tom Aspinall feels ready to elevate his career with his upcoming return to the UFC. The heavyweight champion has been stuck in recovery since his eye injuries during a no-contest against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 last October. After undergoing various medical treatments for his eyes, the 32-year-old made headlines by signing with Eddie Hearn’s newly formed Matchroom Talent Agency.
Choosing a Trusted Partner
In a recent appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show”, Aspinall shared his reasons for partnering with Hearn, particularly amidst Hearn’s ongoing feud with UFC CEO Dana White. Aspinall expressed that he felt an immediate connection with Hearn and the Matchroom team, stating, “We just clicked, and it works.”
Auspicious Timing for Aspinall’s Signing
Given the current state of boxing and the heated competition between promoters, Aspinall’s move to Matchroom is timely. The tension intensified as Hearn’s rival promotion, Zuffa Boxing, has stirred up drama, including White challenging Hearn to a boxing match.
Financial Aspirations for Fighters
Aspinall acknowledged concerns raised by UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, who suggested he might be a pawn in the promotional feud. However, Aspinall reassured that he is optimistic about his decision, knowing he can step back if necessary. “I wanted to sign this; otherwise, I wouldn’t have signed it,” he said. He hopes to increase his media presence and commercial opportunities through this partnership.
Comparing Pay Structures
Aspinall also stressed the financial disparity between MMA and boxing. He remarked that his earning potential has never been clearer, stating, “There’s so much… my earning potential is so much more than what I’m making in the UFC.” This reinforces his desire to maximize earnings while maintaining his health and career.
Focused on Recovery and Future Fighting
While some may speculate about a transition to boxing given Hearn’s background, Aspinall remains focused solely on his MMA career for now. He reports that his recovery is progressing positively and hopes to be medically cleared soon, confident he will return to the Octagon in 2026.
Aspinall reflected on the previously uncertain nature of his health. “Everything now is moving good,” he affirmed. He expressed optimism about his vision improvement and is eager to resume his fighting career while ensuring his well-being comes first.
