Blue Jays Secure Comeback Win Against Cardinals
ST. LOUIS — The Toronto Blue Jays seemed on track for a straightforward victory after dominating the first seven and a half innings of Monday’s game.
However, in a dramatic turn during the bottom of the eighth, Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera hit a three-run homer off Yariel Rodríguez, shifting the momentum to St. Louis with a 4-3 lead.
But the Blue Jays quickly rallied back. In the top of the ninth, with one out, Jonatan Clase launched a game-tying home run. In extra innings, Alejandro Kirk drove in Addison Barger, leading to a 5-4 victory for Toronto.
Now at 36-30, the Blue Jays are six games over .500 for the first time this season. Their 20th comeback win reinforces their talent and resilience, adding confidence within the team as they continue their road trip.
“This shows our growth from last year,” Kirk noted through interpreter Hector Lebron. “Coming back like this brings us closer as a team.”
The foundation for the victory was laid by Jose Berrios, who pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, proving reliable despite uncertainties in the starting rotation. He struck out only one batter but effectively saved the bullpen.
Manager John Schneider praised Kirk for his dual role in managing the pitching staff while maintaining a batting average of .316, stating, “He’s just Kirky. He’s one of a kind.” Both the manager and Berrios recognized Clase’s significant contribution in hitting his first home run, marking an emotional moment for the team.
