Brathwaite Dropped for Final Test
Following a series of disappointing scores, West Indies coach Daren Sammy made the significant decision to exclude opener Kraigg Brathwaite from the final Test against Australia, which began yesterday at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
Australia Takes Early Lead
In the day/night match, Australia chose to bat first and reached 138 for three after 52 overs at the dinner break last evening.
Ending a Historic Streak
This decision marked the end of Brathwaite’s impressive streak of consecutive Test appearances, having played 90 Tests in a row since 2014. His streak culminated in his 100th Test in Grenada during the second match of the current series.
Achieving Test Milestone
By reaching the 100-Test milestone, Brathwaite became only the tenth West Indian to achieve this feat, surpassing Gary Sobers’ long-standing record of 85 consecutive matches between 1955 and 1972. Other notable West Indians include Desmond Haynes (72 matches) and Brian Lara (64 matches).
Brathwaite’s Reflection
Brathwaite reflected on his achievement, stating, “I set that goal when I was probably 14 years old — to play 100 Tests. I’m thankful, and I aspire to inspire younger players. I wanted to make an impact, not just be another player.” However, at 32, his performance has dwindled, with only one half-century in 2024 and a high score of 52 this year.
Calls for Change
After losing the first two matches of the series, Sammy hinted at team changes, pointing out Brathwaite’s struggles. He mentioned, “We need to discuss the situation and evaluate whether it’s fair to continue as is.” Former player Tony Gray also suggested Brathwaite should not have been selected based on current form, emphasizing the importance of confidence and technical soundness in an opening batsman.
Injury Concerns and Team Changes
Alongside Brathwaite, fast bowler Anderson Phillip and middle-order batter Keacy Carty were also omitted from the starting lineup. Newcomers Kevlon Anderson and opener Mikyle Louis joined the team, while vice-captain Jomel Warrican also made the playing XI. However, the team faced further setbacks, as Louis left the field due to a knee injury, and Alzarri Joseph required a scan after discomfort while bowling.
Current Match Status
Dinner score stood at: AUSTRALIA 138-3, 52 overs (Cameron Green 46, Steven Smith 36 not out, Usman Khawaja 23, Sam Konstas 17). The West Indies team comprised Roston Chase (Captain), Mikyle Louis, John Campbell, Kevlon Anderson, Brandon King, Shai Hope, Justin Greaves, Alzarri Joseph, Jomel Warrican, Shamar Joseph, and Jayden Seales.
