SJM Resorts Announces Early Closure of Casino Grandview
SJM Resorts SA, the entity holding the gaming license for SJM Holdings Ltd in Macau, revealed on Monday that Casino Grandview in Taipa, one of its satellite casinos, will close at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, July 30, ahead of schedule.
Decision Context
The operator did not provide specific reasons for the early closure of Casino Grandview in its announcement, stating only that the decision aligns with the group’s “overall business planning and commercial considerations.”
Future of Satellite Casinos
On June 9, SJM Holdings outlined plans to discontinue operations at seven out of its nine satellite casinos by the end of the year. It indicated that only Ponte 16 and L’Arc Macau would operate beyond 2025, with intentions to acquire these properties for direct management.
Customer Compensation
SJM Resorts confirmed that all gaming tables from Casino Grandview will be moved to other company casinos to serve customers. The company also assured that patrons holding unredeemed chips, deposits, or cash rebates can contact Casino Casa Real for resolution beginning July 31, 2025.
Industry Context
Both Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd and Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd announced on June 9 they would also close their satellite gaming venues by year-end. Under the new gaming regulations, third-party investors in satellite casinos will only be allowed to earn a management fee starting in 2026.
Regulatory Oversight
The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau will oversee the closure of Casino Grandview, ensuring compliance and communication with the Labour Affairs Bureau regarding guidelines for the 159 staff members at the site.
Impact on the Gaming Sector
CreditSights Inc, a financial research firm, indicated that the closure of satellite casinos in downtown Macau is unlikely to significantly impact the gaming sector, as affected gaming tables will likely be reassigned to other operations. Observers suggest that patrons from these satellite venues might migrate to mainstream casinos managed directly by the concessionaires.
