The Casino Campaign of 2004
In 2004, I returned to Pompano Park with a mission to gather support for a referendum in Broward County that sought to allow the construction of a casino right at our venue.
A Talented Team
We assembled an impressive group, our “Sweet 16,” which included notable names such as Wally Hennessey, Mickey McNichol, and Bruce Ranger, among many others, who could rally any team to success.
Advocating for Education
We reached out to libraries, schools, and community centers to emphasize how a local casino could significantly benefit our educational system. The advancements in technology over recent years have highlighted the need for our youth to receive enhanced education, supporting our argument for funding from the proposed casino.
The Transition to a New Era
Our campaign resulted in an overwhelming “yes” vote from the community, marking the start of a new chapter in Florida harness racing. The rapid construction transformed Pompano Park into the winter hub for harness racing, offering numerous amenities including a large gaming area and dining options.
Decline and Concerns
Fast forward almost 19 years, and the initial benefits have begun to fade. Many of the once-thriving facilities have closed, and the focus on the casino has overshadowed the racing aspect, putting many jobs at risk and diminishing the sport itself.
The Broader Impact on Racing
Throughout South Florida, signs of distress in the harness racing sector have emerged. As Pompano Park faced neglect, other tracks followed suit, and it has raised fears about the future of iconic venues that once flourished. Without the correct marketing and focus, the sport faces systemic challenges.
Call for Action
While some facilities, like Tioga Downs and Saratoga, have made investments in their infrastructure to benefit horsemen, many others remain stagnant. It is crucial that we prioritize the modernization of barns and racetracks alongside casinos to ensure the survival of harness racing. Without these changes, the future remains grim.
May The Horse Be With You!
