Jaydon Blue’s Journey: From Texas to the NFL
FRISCO, Texas – The likelihood of Jaydon Blue choosing to play at Georgia Tech was slim when Tashard Choice presented him with the offer in May 2020.
Predictably, Blue, ranked as the sixth-best running back in the 2022 class, committed to Texas, continuing his football career in his home state. Shortly after he signed with the Longhorns, Texas appointed Choice as their running backs coach, setting the stage for an exceptional three years ahead.
“From day one, Blue was visibly enthusiastic about football and demonstrated intelligence on the field,” Choice remarked. “My focus was on preparing him physically, especially since he didn’t compete during his senior year in high school.”
Choice, who played for the Cowboys from 2008-2011 and is now a coach for the Detroit Lions, acknowledged that he is a tough coach. This was especially true for Blue, entering a room of competing talents, including future NFL players Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, Jonathan Brooks, and Keilan Robinson.
Despite occasional disagreements over minor details, Choice observed Blue’s game gradually improve. “I coached Blue just as I did with Bijan and others, ensuring he developed the same qualities,” Choice explained. “Although he didn’t play much during his first year, flashes of his potential emerged in practice and games.”
Blue’s real potential became evident during his sophomore season, particularly in spring training, where he transformed into a more dynamic player. Choice noted, “He arrived at spring ball as a markedly improved football player, showcasing his explosiveness and refinement in route running.”
By his third season, Blue had positioned himself for a fifth-round draft pick by the Cowboys. With starting running back Cedric Baxter sidelined for the year, Blue achieved over 1,000 scrimmage yards and scored 14 touchdowns, aiding Texas in reaching the College Football Playoff for a consecutive year. Choice highlighted Blue’s maturity throughout his final season, noting how he maintained focus and positivity despite injury setbacks.
