Fujifilm GFX100RF: Introduction
Fujifilm has unveiled the GFX100RF, marking its first fixed-lens mirrorless camera within the GFX lineup. It boasts a 28mm f/4 lens equivalent to full-frame in front of a medium format 102-megapixel sensor.
Weight and Portability
Weighing just 1.62 pounds (735 grams), the GFX100RF claims the title of the lightest model in Fujifilm’s GFX series. Victor Ha, VP of Electronic Imaging and Optical Devices at Fujifilm North America Corporation, stated, “GFX100RF redefines portability for the GFX System.” He emphasized how the camera combines their “Straight Out of Camera” philosophy and the quality of the GFX system for high-resolution images.
Design and Features
Fujifilm focused on compactness when designing the GFX100RF while enabling photographers to utilize the high-resolution sensor effectively. The camera features a maximum aperture of f/4 and does not include in-body image stabilization (IBIS). However, it includes a “zoom” rocker and a dedicated aspect ratio dial, which leverage the sensor’s capabilities.
Zoom and Aspect Ratios
The zoom rocker allows users to digitally tele-convert the frame for various focal lengths at the expense of resolution, transitioning from its native 35mm focal length (28mm full-frame) to three additional lengths. The camera also introduces two new aspect ratios, “3:4” and “17:6,” alongside a new “Surround View” feature that helps with framing based on the selected aspect ratio.
Lens and Shutter Design
The GFX100RF features a newly developed 35mm f/4 fixed lens, exclusive to this model. Using a leaf shutter system improves the overall size and reduces vibrations, making it more suitable for handheld photos even at slower shutter speeds without IBIS.
Image Quality and Performance
Combining a 102-megapixel CMOS II HS sensor with the X-Processor 5 enhances the dynamic range, low-light capabilities, and autofocus performance. The camera supports various AF functions, including subject recognition for specific subjects like animals and vehicles. It can capture video in 4K at 30p and includes a built-in ND filter for flexibility in shooting conditions.
Availability and Pricing
The Fujifilm GFX100RF is set to be available in silver and black, with shipments expected to start in late April at a price point of $4,899.95.
