LONDON (AP) — Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the disgraced younger brother of King Charles III, is set to relocate to a secluded estate following revelations about his prior friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This transition to Sandringham in eastern England is intended to provide Andrew, 65, increased distance from an irritated British public in light of ongoing scandals involving him.
New Living Arrangements
Despite losing his titles and privileges — and departing from the 30-room Royal Lodge at Windsor Castle — Andrew will not experience a significant downturn in lifestyle at Sandringham.
Nestled in one of the U.K.’s least densely populated areas, Sandringham is not classified as an official royal residence, which Charles hopes will lessen public scrutiny. Funding for Andrew’s move will be covered by the King, utilizing his personal finances to ensure that British taxpayers are not burdened.
A Historical Estate
The Sandringham Estate, owned by the royal family since 1862, has served as a cherished retreat for the last six British monarchs. Located approximately 110 miles (180 kilometers) north of London, it boasts picturesque parklands, gardens, and working farms.
Potential Residences
Speculation suggests Andrew may not occupy Wood Farm, favored by his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Instead, he might choose from various properties, including Park House, the childhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales, or York Cottage, previously inhabited by King George V.
Gradual Transition
Although moving to Sandringham symbolizes Andrew’s fall from grace, it subjects him to heightened scrutiny, particularly regarding his long-standing association with Epstein. He denies all allegations of wrongdoing linked to this relationship. The relocation process won’t be swift, requiring time to sort through belongings and finalize arrangements with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.
As the holidays approach, the logistical challenges of his move serve the royal family’s aim to distance Andrew from festivities, especially considering the significance of Christmas gatherings at Sandringham House, which features around 100 rooms. Ultimately, even if he downsizes to the three-bedroom Folly, it could prove more than sufficient for his needs as a single man.
