Goodison Park as Home for Everton Women
Beginning in the 2025/26 season, Goodison Park will serve as the permanent venue for Everton Women. This decision follows the men’s senior team relocation to the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock this summer, ensuring that Goodison Park remains integral to the club’s identity.
Stadium Upgrades and Economic Impact
To prepare for the women’s team, Everton plans to renovate Goodison Park, ensuring it meets the necessary standards for hosting their matches. A club announcement highlighted the potential for increased foot traffic on match days, which could benefit local businesses economically.
Hosting Various Matches
Goodison Park is set to accommodate certain academy matches and will expand Everton in the Community’s L4 campus. While the stadium’s current capacity of 39,572 would make it the largest dedicated women’s football venue in the UK, plans for any modifications to this figure are still under consideration.
Previous Home Matches
Since 2020, the women’s team has been playing at Walton Hall Park, which can hold 2,200 spectators. This venue will continue to support grassroots and developmental initiatives for women and girls in football. The team has also held matches at Goodison Park in the past, including the Merseyside derby against Liverpool Women.
Commitment to Women’s Football
According to an Everton statement, this move follows a thorough assessment of the Goodison Legacy project by The Friedkin Group (TFG), which acquired the club in December. The decision underscores the growth of Everton Women’s team and their requirement for a larger, more fitting space compared to Walton Hall Park.
Leadership Perspectives
Everton CEO Angus Kinnear expressed the significance of Goodison Park to both the club and its supporters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining such a historic stadium within the legacy project. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the club’s abilities to overcome them.
A Historic Venue for Women’s Football
As Everton Women make Goodison Park their permanent home, it’s essential to recognize the stadium’s historical importance in women’s football. Notably, on December 27, 1920, it hosted a pivotal match between the Dick, Kerr Ladies and St. Helens Ladies, attracting over 45,000 fans, a record that one stood unbroken for decades.
