Introduction to LIV Golf Promotions
The quest for three spots in LIV Golf begins this Thursday in Lecanto, Florida, where the Saudi-backed league will conduct LIV Promotions, its equivalent of Q-School, at Black Diamond Ranch.
Competition Format
In this 72-hole stroke-play tournament, 80 players will participate, with 20 of them already exempt to the second round. Following Round 1, the top 20 players and ties will advance to the second round, where scores will reset. The top 20 from this round will continue to Saturday’s third round, with scores reset again, ultimately vying for three wild-card spots in LIV this season.
Risks of Participation
Entering this week’s Promotions event carries certain risks. The previous two events were deemed allowable by the PGA Tour. They stated, “Based on available information, the LIV Golf Promotion event is classified as a qualifying event and not as part of an unauthorized series. This classification may change if event details are modified.”
PGA Tour Regulations
However, this week’s event is different. Sports Illustrated reported that players with PGA Tour status won’t receive a release to participate and will face disciplinary measures if they do. The PGA Tour’s handbook clarifies, “No releases will be approved for conflicting events held in North America.”
Consequences for Non-Exempt Players
The PGA Tour also indicated that players without status on its tours will face one-year bans from all PGA Tour-sanctioned events, including the 2026 Q-School. At least one player has withdrawn after learning about the potential suspension for participation.
