During his “Y’s Guys” interview on Monday night, AJ Dybantsa’s two distinct personalities became evident.
“I‘m a big family guy. I do everything for my family and with my family. It’s good to have my family around knowing that I have unconditional love to the left and right of me.”
— AJ Dybantsa
One side of AJ is the top basketball recruit globally, a strong contender for the 2026 NBA draft. The other AJ is a humble, authentic young man from Brockton, Massachusetts, who enjoys humor, laughter, and family time.
“On the court, I may appear as a different person,” Dybantsa said during the podcast. “I play with a lot of passion and intensity. Off the court, I’m much more relaxed and think I’m funny, though I might be a bit corny.”
AJ’s family has heavily influenced his journey to BYU, especially his parents, Ace and Chelsea Dybantsa, who toured the campus last April. “I wouldn’t be here without them,” he remarked, attributing his work ethic to their guidance. He prioritizes school, basketball, and family over activities like video gaming.
Regarded as the No. 1 high school recruit, Dybantsa is projected to be the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft if he leaves after one season at BYU. “Who says it’s just a year?” he quipped with a smile.
After attending his first workout with the team, Dybantsa noted the intensity and differences of playing on a professional-sized court. He addressed BYU’s high preseason expectations, advising that projections shouldn’t be taken too seriously until the full roster is present.
Dybantsa looks forward to his debut in the Marriott Center and recalls being introduced after announcing his commitment to BYU last December, stating he was overwhelmed but appreciated the crowd’s warm reception. Now integrated into the BYU community, he plans to continue his involvement in community work, much like he did in Brockton. Dybantsa believes the choice to play at BYU speaks for itself, highlighting the opportunities presented by the coaching staff and their NBA experience.
