Lex Luger’s Heartwarming WWE Hall of Fame Induction
Lex Luger’s recent induction into the WWE Hall of Fame on Friday was a touching moment, resonating with significance beyond just the honor itself.
Luger was inducted alongside fellow honorees Triple H and Michelle McCool, among eight individuals celebrated during WrestleMania week in Las Vegas. His journey to this milestone has been fraught with challenges; many feared he would never achieve it due to extensive legal issues and struggles with substance abuse. By the late 2000s, Luger’s health had deteriorated to the point where he approached becoming a quadriplegic, with limited movement in his head and shoulders attributed to a cervical injury. However, a turning point came when Diamond Dallas Page, another WWE Hall of Famer, stepped in to support him.
During an interview on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show”, Page discussed Luger’s recovery journey. The transformation began when Erik Watts, one of Luger’s former adversaries, reached out to Page with news of Luger’s newfound faith and changes in character.
“Watts told me that Lex had embraced Christianity and was a different person now,” Page shared. “At first, I couldn’t believe it, as I knew how much they had clashed in the past. But Watts insisted it was true, mentioning they were living together.” This led Page to an event where Luger’s condition became apparent.
Upon arriving, Page learned that the event’s promoter was frantic, fearing that Luger had suffered a heart attack. Due to Luger’s critical state, paramedics were required to break down his hotel door. Luger recounted his experience of feeling panic as he struggled to move, thinking he was just dehydrated.
When Page finally met Luger, he initially seemed unaware of how serious his situation was, even rejecting hospitalization. Page later discovered that Luger’s health issues were more critical than he had assumed. Over time, with Page’s guidance and unique workout regimens tailored to Luger’s capabilities, Luger gradually regained strength and mobility.
By the time of his Hall of Fame ceremony, Luger had made significant strides, but an unfortunate accident in Las Vegas shortly before the event required a last-minute adjustment to his presentation plans. The challenges he faced ultimately allowed him to confront his deepest struggles, leading to a transformative journey that enabled him to make a positive change.
