Razer CEO Discusses Generative AI’s Role in Gaming
Min-Liang Tan, the CEO of Razer, has shared his thoughts on the growing debate around generative AI in the gaming industry. He argues that, while this technology is controversial, it has the potential to create impressive art that gamers have yet to appreciate fully.
“Amidst all the mediocre output, exceptional art will eventually emerge, crafted using the same tools that produced subpar content,” Tan stated in an interview with The Verge.
Razer is actively integrating AI technology into its products, showcasing new offerings at CES 2026, including a set of over-ear headphones and a robust workstation PC designed for intensive AI tasks. Additionally, Razer has released an open-source AI developer kit for programmers and business users.
Tan emphasized the company’s focus on the needs of gamers and developers, stating, “We see ourselves as the bridge between both parties and strive to keep them satisfied.”
Despite a backlash against AI in the gaming community, particularly noted in comments on Razer’s promotional social media posts, Tan remains optimistic about changing perceptions. He believes that gamers will eventually recognize the artistry that generative AI can offer.
When asked about the common objections to generative AI, Tan acknowledged gamers’ dissatisfaction with poorly executed AI content, saying, “We are not thrilled with irrelevant outputs, like character models with extra fingers or poorly crafted narratives.” He expressed hope that developers could leverage AI to enhance their work and produce better games.
While some companies are opting to ban generative AI, like Games Workshop, others are embracing it wholeheartedly. Leaders from various gaming companies, including EA and Genvid, have expressed strong support for using AI in their business strategies. As the industry evolves, the debate will likely continue regarding AI’s place and potential in game development.
