George Clooney Responds to Trump Criticism Over French Citizenship
George Clooney has voiced his displeasure with US President Donald Trump, who criticized France’s decision to grant Clooney and his family French citizenship.
The 64-year-old Oscar-winning actor, along with his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney and their two children, became French citizens earlier this month after residing in southern France for several years.
Clooney praised France’s privacy laws, which have sheltered his family from extensive media scrutiny, and he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to raise his children away from Hollywood influences.
Trump, known for supporting anti-immigration stances in Europe, took to Truth Social to comment on the news. He welcomed the Clooneys but added sarcastically, “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their horrendous handling of immigration.”
In response to Trump’s remarks regarding the upcoming US midterm elections on November 3, Clooney stated, “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”
The announcement of the Clooney family’s new French citizenship comes as France prepares to implement stricter language requirements for citizenship applicants starting January 1. Some officials have raised concerns about granting citizenship despite Clooney’s limited proficiency in French.
Despite reservations, French officials defended the Clooneys’ citizenship, highlighting their contributions to France’s cultural and economic prestige through Clooney’s film career and Amal’s work as a renowned lawyer. The French foreign ministry confirmed that their naturalization followed a rigorous legal process.
