The NFL has entered a brief pause as we step back from the offseason excitement characterized by free agency, the draft, and rookie minicamps.
While everyone catches their breath, the New York Giants are gradually ramping up their offseason activities in preparation for mandatory mini-camp.
General Manager Joe Schoen took the opportunity to appear on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams” podcast while the players were busy practicing. Although he avoided breaking any major news, such as a potential Gabe Davis signing, he did share valuable insights.
Thoughts on the Giants’ Schedule
It’s widely known that the Giants are facing one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this season, at least on paper. However, Schoen maintains that this might not be entirely negative.
He sees the challenging starts against teams like the Commanders, Cowboys, Chiefs, and Chargers as a valuable opportunity.
“A strong start is crucial. We accomplished this in 2022, and it’s been a struggle in previous years. It’s essential when you kick off with two division games against Washington and Dallas, plus a prime-time game at home,” Schoen remarked.
Excitement Surrounding the Giants’ Defense
Ideally, the roster changes will yield positive results, particularly on the defensive side. Schoen and the front office aimed to bolster this unit.
Adams brought up the third overall pick, Abdul Carter, asking Schoen about his impressions of having Carter in the building.
“Seeing his work ethic first-hand has been impressive,” Schoen stated. “He’s consistently demonstrating commitment and enthusiasm for football, showing up early to lift sessions and putting in additional work on the field.”
The Impact of Jaxson Dart
While Abdul Carter was a standout in the draft, Jaxson Dart has been the talk around the Giants. Adams remarked on Brian Daboll’s excitement during the draft process and inquired about Dart’s role within the team.
“This was a collective decision,” Schoen explained. “Jaxson kept catching our attention throughout fall, playing live, and we spent significant time with him during the Senior Bowl this spring.”
Schoen acknowledged that Daboll’s offensive background and experience with young quarterbacks would be instrumental in Dart’s development.
“When both coaches and scouts believe in a player, it increases the likelihood of success significantly,” Schoen concluded.
