The Government anticipates a funding request to address infrastructure and hospitality needs in Adare due to the upcoming 2027 Ryder Cup, according to Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan.
O’Donovan noted that a request for additional funds is expected this year to support the event.
His remarks followed a report from the Irish Times, which indicated that an additional €30 million in public funding is likely to be requested to facilitate the golf tournament at Adare Manor, an exclusive hotel and golf resort owned by billionaire JP McManus.
The Government has already allocated €58 million in support of the event, alongside €150 million for essential transport infrastructure that must be completed before the competition in 2027.
During a Fine Gael event in Mullingar, Mr. O’Donovan refuted claims that funds were being given directly to McManus, clarifying, “We haven’t given anything to JP McManus.” He emphasized that the McManus family is handling internal golf club needs, while the Government will cover external expenses.
O’Donovan highlighted that a formal request for public works related to infrastructure and hospitality is expected before the end of the year, mentioning that necessary improvements will take place in the surrounding village.
In defending the Government’s investment in golf, he mentioned the success of the Irish Open, which recently concluded, and pointed out that two key infrastructure projects— a rail link between Limerick and Foynes, and the Adare bypass—will enhance the local legacy of the event.
