Arsenal faced a challenging match against League One’s Mansfield but managed to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals, keeping their hopes of a quadruple alive.
Mikel Arteta surprisingly opted for a starting lineup featuring two 16-year-olds and changed the formation to a three-man defense, making adjustments before a packed schedule.
This decision almost backfired, as the Gunners had to weather a significant amount of pressure from Mansfield’s players to secure their spot in the last eight.
From the start, Arsenal appeared unsettled by the pitch conditions and their own formation. This allowed Mansfield to dominate early on, with eight attempts on goal compared to Arsenal’s three within the first 15 minutes.
An injury to Leandro Trossard provided Arteta with an opportunity to revert to a more traditional back four, allowing Arsenal to find their rhythm.
Noni Madueke, who had been playing conservatively as a makeshift right wing-back, seized the moment and scored just before halftime, giving the favorites a vital lead.
Despite expectations of a stronger second half for Arsenal, Mansfield quickly equalized through substitute Will Evans, who took advantage of a mistake from 16-year-old Marli Salmon, sending the home crowd into jubilation.
With Mansfield gaining momentum, Arteta had to make tactical changes, bringing on Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka. Eze proved decisive, scoring to regain the lead for Arsenal. Despite a valiant effort from Mansfield, the Premier League leaders held on for a 2-1 victory, securing their place in the quarter-finals.
Arteta: Mansfield Made It Challenging
Mikel Arteta to TNT Sports: “This was a true FA Cup clash. Mansfield created a great atmosphere and made it very tough for us. We must be more ruthless in front of goal; we missed several opportunities. We also had some defensive errors leading to their goal, but it’s a unique experience having two 16-year-olds start together.”
Clough: We Made It a True Cup Tie
Nigel Clough to TNT Sports: “The players delivered an incredible effort. We aimed to make this a real cup contest and pushed Arsenal hard. While we could have done more, I’m proud of our performance.”
Looking Back with Pride
Will Evans to TNT Sports: “I was disappointed not to start, but I aimed to make an impact. Scoring felt amazing, but we quickly need to shift focus to our next game.”
