Positive Update on Billy Joel’s Health
Howard Stern recently provided a encouraging update regarding Billy Joel following the singer’s unexpected brain disorder diagnosis.
During an episode of SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show,” the 71-year-old radio personality announced that Joel is “not dying” after his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus.
“I had dinner with Billy Joel two weeks ago,” Stern shared with co-host Robin Quivers. “He’s doing well.”
Stern elaborated, stating that while Joel faces some challenges, he reassured, “You can tell people, you know, I’m not dying.” Stern noted Joel is handling his medical issues and still enjoyed their time together.
They had a “great conversation” during their time together, celebrating Joel’s 76th birthday on May 9, which included singing “Happy Birthday” together. Stern humorously remarked that Joel didn’t seem particularly impressed by his singing.
Context of Joel’s Diagnosis
Joel’s health update follows his recent announcement about a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, leading him to cancel all tour dates through the next year. This rare condition, affecting about 0.2% of individuals aged 70-80, occurs when cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the skull, exerting pressure on the brain and impairing cognitive functions.
Responses and Ongoing Support
Following the diagnosis, Joel expressed his regrets to fans for disappointing them due to his health issues, thanking them for their understanding and support. His wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, also shared her gratitude for the strong support and care received, expressing hope for his recovery.
Despite his difficulties, sources close to Joel have stated he is “not ready to retire,” emphasizing that music remains a central part of his life and he aims to resume performing as he recovers. Nonetheless, Joel will not be attending the Tribeca Festival premiere of his documentary on June 4 due to his current health condition.
