Startups Halt Operations Amid Gaming Ban
Major Indian startups in real-money gaming are ceasing operations following New Delhi’s near-ban of the sector through impending legislation.
Legislation Passed in Parliament
The Indian Parliament’s upper house recently approved the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which seeks to outlaw real-money gaming while supporting casual online games and esports. The bill cleared the lower house the day before and is expected to receive presidential approval soon.
Companies Begin Shutdowns
In response to the bill’s passage, notable companies like Dream Sports and Mobile Premier League (MPL), along with others such as Gameskraft, Probo, and Zupee, have started closing their real-money gaming divisions. Employees were informed right after the bill’s approval, while some companies communicated directly with users via their apps.
Impact on Dream Sports
Dream Sports has terminated its newly launched quick-play fantasy app, Dream Picks, while its other platforms like Dream11 remain active for now. However, a complete shutdown of its real-money business is planned once the legislation is enacted.
MPL and Other Startups Follow Suit
MPL has also suspended all real-money gaming activities and is no longer accepting deposits. A notification on their app states that withdrawals will be available starting August 22, 2025. Similarly, Zupee has halted real-money games immediately, but free titles will still be accessible.
Sector Overview and Future Challenges
With the gaming sector facing shutdowns, many employees are actively seeking new employment. Despite the potential for legal challenges in the Supreme Court, most companies have not opted to pursue this route. The Indian real-money gaming sector is valued at approximately ₹2 trillion ($23 billion) and contributes significantly to the economy, raising concerns over its future.
