Offseason Changes and Outlook for the Arizona Diamondbacks
Numerous roster adjustments this offseason are likely to reshape the perception of Major League Baseball teams among fans and media. However, early power rankings indicate a pessimistic view regarding the Arizona Diamondbacks’ future.
This skepticism is partly justified by two key factors: first, the Diamondbacks underperformed and failed to qualify for the postseason in 2025; second, their starting rotation poses significant concerns.
Intent to Compete
Nevertheless, the Diamondbacks have expressed their desire to compete in the upcoming year, featuring an exciting offensive roster that includes Geraldo Perdomo, Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, and Gabriel Moreno. Arizona’s performance has fluctuated, improving from 52 wins in 2021 to 74 in 2022, 84 in 2023, and 89 in 2024, before settling back at 80-82 after losing their last five games of the season.
Power Rankings Overview
The Athletic ranked the Diamondbacks at No. 18 in its early power rankings, placing them behind the Giants and ahead of the Royals. Similarly, USA Today also noted them at 18th, while ESPN was more critical, placing them at 22nd, behind the Marlins and ahead of the Astros.
Reasons for the Rankings
The Diamondbacks are likely to start 2026 without key players like starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, first baseman Josh Naylor, and third baseman Eugenio Suarez. General manager Mike Hazen admitted the need for roster depth improvements following a disappointing fourth-place finish in the NL West.
Offensive and Pitching Challenges
Entering the offseason, the Diamondbacks face the challenge of replacing 47 home runs lost from Suarez and Naylor. Despite scoring significantly over recent seasons, pitching remains a critical issue, especially losing Gallen as a free agent and potentially missing out on Corbin Burnes for most of the coming season due to Tommy John surgery. They will need to address their bullpen, which finished with a high ERA of 4.82 and faced injuries among key relievers.
Looking Ahead
With questions surrounding several position player spots, including third base and designated hitter, the Diamondbacks have a lot to evaluate. They plan to prioritize pitching and defense this winter and may need to trade offensive talent for better run prevention. The free agency landscape could provide them opportunities, but they’ll need to navigate these challenges carefully given their lower payroll.
