Exciting Premiere of Champions of Faith: Baseball Edition
I recently discovered that Champions of Faith: Baseball Edition will premiere on EWTN, just in time for the baseball season.
Although the film was released 17 years ago, its impact remains fresh in my mind. It became a cherished routine for my son, Sean, and me to watch it frequently together.
The documentary features prominent Major League Baseball players discussing their deep devotion to Jesus Christ and their Catholic faith without being overly sentimental. The hour-long film includes intense moments such as a fight, dramatic events, and even a death, but the players come across as informed catechists, clearly and passionately sharing their beliefs.
At that time, the film struck a chord with me. Not since The Passion of the Christ had a Catholic film so profoundly moved and humbled me, forcing me to reflect on my own hesitations about openly declaring my faith. When the film debuted in Phoenix in 2007 during spring training, Bishop Thomas Olmsted attended. I was still a largely quiet Catholic, hiding my devotion to Mary, adoration, and the saints. Hearing players like Mike Piazza, Jeff Suppan, and Mike Sweeney tell their stories rendered me speechless in a manner reminiscent of my reaction during the scourging scene of The Passion.
Tom Allen, the film’s executive producer, discussed its impact upon release: “After Champions of Faith, Catholic athletes appeared more willing to express their faith publicly. It captivated audiences during a time when the faith-film movement was gaining momentum following The Passion. The film’s unique approach continues to resonate with audiences who now want their children and grandchildren to experience it. It presents Catholicism in an appealing light and has stood the test of time.”
The film gained several accolades, including “Best Documentary” from Catholics in Media Associates and honors for “Producer of the Year” and “Best Movie Presentation for Catholic Evangelization” from the United Catholic Music & Video Association. Critics praised its high production quality, engaging narratives, and sophisticated presentation, complemented by high-definition MLB footage and lively rock tracks featuring artists like Bob Dylan and Third Day, all contributing to the players’ emotional and transformative journeys.
