Jake Mangum’s Journey in Baseball
Jake Mangum, who holds the record for the most hits in Southeastern Conference history, celebrated his 29th birthday earlier this month. While he is still considered young, especially in everyday terms, his ‘baseball age’ suggests he’s approaching the latter part of his career.
Regarded as one of the most beloved players in Mississippi State history, Mangum has spent five seasons in the minor leagues with three Major League organizations but has yet to make his debut in a regular season game. Last November, the Tampa Bay Rays added him to their 40-man roster; however, they are limited to keeping only 26 players for the start of the season. Current projections do not see Mangum making the cut, a situation that perplexes many baseball observers.
Skills and Performance
As a switch-hitter, Mangum has consistently performed well at all levels. He excels in base running and is an exceptional fielder capable of playing any outfield position with impressive range and a strong, precise arm. Reports indicate that he is a true team player and a leader on the field.
Nevertheless, Mangum’s style of play highlights a significant shift in Major League Baseball, which now tends to value power hitting and home runs over other skills. Despite this evolution, he continues to be an effective hitter and maintains an impressive batting average during spring training.
Spring Training and Hopes for the Major League
After having just his second day off during spring training with the Rays, Mangum is uncertain whether he will start the regular season with the Major League team or return to play for the Class AAA Durham Bulls. “I obviously hope to be in the Major Leagues on opening day,” he expressed, emphasizing the importance of remaining focused and continuing to work hard regardless of the outcome.
Currently, Mangum boasts an impressive batting average of .429, having played in 15 of the Rays’ 20 spring training games and leading the team with nine RBIs. While the small sample size should be noted, his performance so far has outshined many of the projected starters. He acknowledges the ongoing narrative about his power hitting, but he is dedicated to improving his strength and hitting skills.
Looking Ahead
In a recent game, Mangum achieved a career milestone by hitting two home runs, a feat he hadn’t accomplished since his youth in little league, showcasing his enhanced strength. “I’ve been training hard and there’s no denying that hitting against Major League pitching is tough. I’m just focusing on making solid contact,” he stated.
Maintaining a good rapport with Rays manager Kevin Cash, Mangum feels encouraged by the praise he receives regarding his performance and determination. Despite the challenges, his passion for baseball is unwavering, as he remains committed to pursuing his dreams. “I love baseball and will keep playing as long as I can,” Mangum concluded.
Note: On March 19, 2024, shortly after this article was published, Jake Mangum was optioned to the Durham Bulls, the Rays’ Class AAA team.
