Jason Day’s Fashion Transformation at the Masters
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Jason Day sought a fresh identity through his attire after years with two renowned sports apparel brands. He aimed for clothing that would help him stand out on the golf course while looking stylish off it.
He achieved this with Malbon Golf at last year’s Masters. Day selected a white sweater vest adorned with the large text “No. 313. Malbon Golf Championship.” He reminisced about wearing a rain suit on the 14th tee while finishing the rain-impacted first round alongside Tiger Woods and Max Homa.
“Max and Tiger commented, ‘That’s kind of boring,’” Day recounted. He had already caught attention with his Malbon Golf outfits over the preceding four months, which embraced a loose, retro style.
“I replied, ‘Just wait until you see what I have on underneath.’ When I took off my jacket, their reactions were priceless. My outfit became a hot topic on social media,” he noted.
However, the excitement might have been a bit excessive for Augusta National, which deemed the logo too extravagant and requested that he refrain from wearing it that afternoon. According to his agent, Bud Martin from Wasserman Media Group, he feared having to navigate this conversation just before Day’s second-round tee-off.
Stephen Malbon, who co-founded the brand with his wife Erica after a creative career in various art subcultures, saw his success skyrocket that day. “We may be well-known for better or worse,” Malbon stated, reflecting on how this attention highlighted the potential for golf to attract younger audiences drawn by fashion.
As Day prepares for another Masters alongside Malbon Golf, their partnership has evolved into a mutually beneficial collaboration. Day, who has a stake in the brand and contributes to its designs, aims to push boundaries without overstepping, a goal that aligns with Malbon’s vision.
