As we enter October, a month often associated with unease as it progresses, the WPIAL community can look forward to an exciting time filled with individual and team championships.
The month kicks off with the concluding round of the 2025 WPIAL Class 3A and 2A individual girls golf championships, taking place at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
In the Class 3A tournament, Elizabeth Forward senior Mya Morgan has established a solid lead after the first round, delivering an impressive 3-under-par 69. She heads into the final round with a five-stroke advantage over Peters Township senior Ellie Benson.
Betty Glyptis, a sophomore from Peters Township, is in third place, trailing eight strokes behind after shooting a 77. The top 10 includes players such as Moon junior Liv Degori (81) and Pine-Richland junior Siena Smith (81), among others.
Meanwhile, in Class 2A, reigning champion Alyssa Zhang is also in a favorable position after her opening round of 1-over-par 73 at Seven Oaks Country Club. She currently leads Chartiers-Houston sophomore JoJo Jaskulski by six strokes.
The competition will kick off with the first group in 3A teeing off at 10 a.m., followed by the 2A foursome at 11:30 a.m. The top seven athletes in 3A and the top nine in 2A will qualify for the upcoming PIAA individual golf championships.
Key Matches in Soccer
This week also features an action-packed schedule in WPIAL girls soccer, highlighted by two crucial first-place games. Seneca Valley, currently leading Section 3-4A, can clinch the section title with a win against Pine-Richland.
In Section 3-A, Sewickley Academy, boasting a perfect 8-0 record within the section, is set to face second-place Seton LaSalle, who are currently 7-1.
Playoff Berth Opportunities
Several teams can secure a district playoff spot with a win on Wednesday, including:
- Class 4A: Armstrong
- Class 3A: Shaler, West Allegheny, Kiski Area
- Class 2A: Belle Vernon, Keystone Oaks, Shady Side Academy
- Class A: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Eden Christian Academy, Freedom, Carlynton
Tennis Championships Begin
This Wednesday, the 2025 WPIAL girls tennis doubles championships will commence, featuring first round, quarterfinal, and semifinal matches for both Class 3A and 2A. Senior pair Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang from Mt. Lebanon are the top seeds in Class 3A.
In Class 2A, senior Marann Buckanovich and freshman Veronica Zinski from Winchester Thurston hold the No. 1 seed and will receive a first-round bye. The tournaments will take place at North Allegheny for Class 3A and Bethel Park for Class 2A, with finals scheduled for Thursday.
