Former Liverpool Director Ian Graham Discusses Virgil van Dijk’s £75m Transfer
Ian Graham, Liverpool’s former director of research, has shared insights into the £75 million transfer of Virgil van Dijk.
In January 2018, the Reds made Van Dijk the most expensive player in the club’s history after he joined from Southampton, initially becoming a target the previous summer until Liverpool had to scale back their pursuit following threats of a tapping-up complaint from the Saints.
Since his arrival at Anfield, Van Dijk has won every major trophy available, made 318 appearances for the club, and served as club captain for the past two seasons after succeeding Jordan Henderson in 2023.
Dr. Graham highlighted that Liverpool’s ability to secure Van Dijk was influenced by significant changes in the transfer landscape, including the sale of Coutinho to Barcelona, which financed the Van Dijk deal. He noted that Liverpool had a highly rated attacking lineup and recognized the necessity to improve their defense.
Graham mentioned that Van Dijk’s earlier struggles at Celtic and subsequent success at Southampton made him appear underrated. He pointed out that, given his age when signed, he was a late bloomer who provided immense value for Liverpool’s defensive needs.
Graham also discussed Fenway’s informal restriction on signing players over 24 years old, emphasizing that Liverpool’s strategy focused on acquiring younger players with potential longevity, particularly in defensive positions. This approach positioned Liverpool to invest effectively in strengthening their squad.
