Doncic Shatters Lakers Scoring Record
LOS ANGELES — Luka Doncic scored an impressive 49 points in the Lakers’ 128-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, surpassing Jerry West’s long-standing franchise mark of 81 points in the first two games of a season. Teammate Austin Reaves was asked if Doncic could maintain a scoring average of 40 points. “Yes,” Reaves affirmed, emphasizing Doncic’s extraordinary talent.
The Lakers’ offense showcased a significant improvement in their second game of the season compared to their opening 119-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors. The team shot 59.2% from the field and 41.4% from three-point range while committing fewer turnovers—only 12 versus 19 in the previous game.
Doncic’s performances have been historic. He became the first player in Lakers history to have consecutive 40-point games at the start of a season and only the fourth in NBA history to achieve this feat alongside legends like Anthony Davis, Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain. Doncic expressed a mix of satisfaction and a desire to improve, stating, “I want to win every game.”
Alongside Doncic’s dominant 49 points, he also contributed 11 rebounds and eight assists, forming a strong partnership with Reaves, who recorded a double-double with 25 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds. Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton added 23 and 15 points, respectively, reinforcing the Lakers’ offensive power.
The Lakers managed to overcome a slow start, trailing by 11 points in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Doncic had tied the franchise record for most first-quarter points with 23. The team then decisively outscored the Timberwolves 72-54 in the middle quarters.
Despite the impressive win, Doncic noted that he is focused on moving past last season’s playoff exit and is not motivated by revenge. Lakers coach JJ Redick acknowledged the team’s effort to improve their third-quarter performances, mentioning that “the other team called the first timeout” after a strong start in the second half.
