Marcus Smart: A Passion for Defense and a Heart for Service
Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart’s commitment to defense is deeply rooted in his challenging childhood experiences. Currently, the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year is busy defending some of the league’s top guards while also using his foundation to support cancer patients and assist troubled youth in inner cities.
“As a defender, you’re often at a disadvantage in basketball, and I’ve felt the same way in life,” Smart, 31, shared with Andscape. “It’s always been a struggle for me. Being the youngest of four boys, I’ve had to fight for everything I want. I’ve faced significant loss, including the passing of my brother at a young age, and dealt with situations most shouldn’t have to experience.”
“Defense reflects that disadvantage. You must adopt a mindset of resilience, refusing to accept defeat and adapting to whatever challenges come your way,” Smart noted.
Making an Impact on and off the Court
Smart, now renowned for his elite defensive play, previously starred for the Boston Celtics and currently shares the court with NBA icons LeBron James and Luka Doncic with the Lakers. He has appeared in six Christmas games during his career, having played his first as a Laker against the Houston Rockets.
His 12-year NBA career has provided him with a platform to support the underprivileged through his YounGameChanger Foundation. This organization focuses on empowering inner-city youth through education, sports, technology, and mentorship while also offering comfort and support to pediatric cancer patients and their families.
Inspiration Behind the Foundation
Smart established his foundation during his early years with the Celtics, driven by personal experiences, particularly the battle with cancer faced by his younger brother, who was diagnosed at 15 and passed away at 33. “These experiences inspired me to create a foundation aimed at helping families affected by cancer and supporting youth,” he explained.
A Journey of Resilience
Smart’s motivation to assist those facing childhood illnesses and challenges stems from his upbringing in Dallas, where he endured hardships that shaped his perspective on life. Growing up, he often found himself in difficult situations due to his family’s struggle with cancer, which took a toll on his mental health. Recognizing that he needed to change, he made significant decisions that redirected the course of his life.
“I promised my mom I’d make it to the NBA, and I did,” he reflected. After leading his high school to state championships and making a mark at Oklahoma State, he was selected sixth overall in the 2014 NBA draft by the Celtics.
A New Chapter with the Lakers
With a career now marked by overcoming personal challenges and a commitment to philanthropy, Smart has transitioned to the Lakers, feeling rejuvenated by the opportunity to play for two historic franchises. “It’s surreal to be a Laker after being a Celtic for so long, but the warmth from the team has been welcoming,” he said.
Ultimately, Smart hopes his journey inspires others to help those in need. “We are fortunate to have the means to support families in need. Sometimes, all it takes is a little time and empathy to make a difference,” he urged.
