We’re now past the quarter mark of the 2025 season, so it’s time to evaluate team performances so far.
These grades are not predictive and should not be interpreted as indicators of future performance. Broadly, they reflect how well each team has performed against preseason expectations. Teams that exceed expectations receive high grades, while those that fall short are likely to receive lower marks. Here’s our evaluation for the American League as of now.
Oakland Athletics: B
Record: 21-20
The A’s have surprised many by being competitive this season, currently sitting above .500 and just two games out of first in the AL West. Key contributors like Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, and Shea Langeliers have added significant power. While their longer-term prospects may lead to a fourth-place finish, they’ve certainly earned their solid grade as we enter May 12.
Baltimore Orioles: F
Record: 15-24
As an O’s fan, frustration is understandable after enduring a rebuild that has not yielded a better team in Adley Rutschman’s fourth season. They have one of the worst records, trailing only the Pirates (14-27), White Sox (12-29), and Rockies (7-33). The pitching rotation has struggled, and the offense ranks low in runs scored, resulting in a well-deserved failing grade.
Boston Red Sox: C
Record: 22-20
Despite the talent available, the Red Sox have not been as strong as they could be, lingering around .500. Acquisitions like Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet have made some impact, but there are avoidable issues such as the Rafael Devers controversies. They are not a bad team, but they have yet to fulfill their potential, leading to a grade of C.
Chicago White Sox: C
Record: 12-29
Despite a poor record, the White Sox have been slightly better than expectations this season. Recent call-ups like Chase Meidroth and Edgar Quero show promise as building blocks for the future. Even with their struggles, there are glimpses of potential, warranting a C grade.
Cleveland Guardians: B
Record: 23-17
The Guardians have shown their ability to win close games despite having a mixed roster. Key players like Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo drive the offense, while the pitching staff has faced challenges yet remains effective. This ability to win tightly contested matchups keeps them competitive, earning them a solid grade.
Detroit Tigers: A
Record: 26-15
The Tigers have defied preseason uncertainties, demonstrating that last season’s playoff push wasn’t a fluke. Notable performances from Casey Mize and Spencer Torkelson have propelled their success. With a robust offense also contributing, they have risen to prominence and deserve an A grade.
