Maurice Greene’s Unexpected Transition to Acting
Maurice Greene, much like his journey in fighting, never anticipated he would take up acting. The former UFC and PFL heavyweight recently landed a significant role in the horror film Him, produced by Jordan Peele, thanks to a chance encounter with a filmmaker scouting for extras in New Mexico. This wasn’t the first time Greene had been told he had the right look for the screen.
Discovering the Film Community
Upon moving to New Mexico, Greene was unaware of the local film community. He relocated for MMA while still competing in the UFC, just after a victory over Gian Villante. Greene participated in a minor project with an independent filmmaker, which introduced him to the world of acting.
Encouragement to Pursue Acting
While competing on The Ultimate Fighter, the production team often urged him to move to Hollywood. Greene, however, preferred visiting rather than relocating. Once settled in New Mexico, he took the opportunity to explore acting, enrolling in a monologue class and signing with Presley Talent after numerous auditions over nearly two years.
Dedication to a New Craft
Greene quickly recognized the importance of dedicating himself to acting as rigorously as he did to MMA. His journey in martial arts began as a way to get in shape after being bullied as an overweight child, leading him to his first fight a month later.
Acknowledging His Fighting Career
Reflecting on his transition, Greene expressed disbelief at how far he progressed in fighting, eventually reaching the UFC. He vividly recalled being a bullied, overweight youth who transformed into a competitive fighter after losing 100 pounds. Despite respect for his past in fighting, Greene faced serious injuries, including nerve issues during his camp for a fight with Greg Hardy, which ultimately influenced his decision to retire.
Retirement and New Opportunities
Following a disappointing knockout in his last fight, Greene concluded it was time to retire from fighting and shift his focus entirely to acting and being present for his family. He emphasized his pride in his fighting legacy while eagerly looking forward to his evolving career in film.
Start of Greene’s Acting Career
Despite starting in smaller roles and stunts, Greene is thrilled about his part in Him. He portrays a character named Cameron Cade, who faces a dark turn during training with a quarterback played by Marlon Wayans. Greene is particularly excited about this film’s release, as it represents a significant step in his new acting journey.
