Denver — The Wolverines are heading to the second round.
It was a challenging contest, filled with nail-biting moments during the NCAA Tournament’s first round on Thursday.
However, like No. 5 seed Michigan has consistently demonstrated throughout the season, they found a way to secure the victory. After surrendering a 15-point lead in the second half, Tre Donaldson hit a crucial 3-pointer in the final two minutes, leading Michigan to a 68-65 win against No. 12 seed UC San Diego at Ball Arena.
BOX SCORE: Michigan 68, UC San Diego 65
Vlad Goldin contributed 14 points and several crucial offensive rebounds in the game’s closing moments, while Donaldson finished with 12 points for Michigan (26-9).
The Wolverines will advance to face No. 4 seed Texas A&M (23-10), who defeated No. 13 seed Yale 80-71, in the Round of 32 on Saturday. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS.
The Wolverines started strong, scoring the first 10 points of the game, including two 3-pointers from Nimari Burnett and Danny Wolf. Michigan’s size and defensive intensity kept UC San Diego from finding their rhythm, culminating in their first basket coming five minutes into the game. Despite some turnovers, Michigan maintained control, ending the first half with a solid 41-27 lead, primarily aided by Goldin’s performance.
Although UC San Diego made a strong push in the second half and even took the lead, Michigan managed to respond effectively in key moments, particularly with Donaldson’s late 3-pointer. Ultimately, Goldin’s additional free throws helped secure the win as UC San Diego missed a crucial shot in the final seconds.
