Aston Martin has reportedly shown interest in signing Mercedes driver George Russell for the 2026 F1 season.
Russell, who transitioned to Mercedes from Williams before the 2022 season, is now in the final six months of his current contract.
Is George Russell Leaving Mercedes for Aston Martin?
Amid ongoing speculations about Mercedes potentially pursuing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, a four-time World Champion, Russell has expressed hope for a contract extension with the Brackley team. As his current deal nears its conclusion, however, he is exploring alternative options as F1 2025 progresses.
While McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are bound by long-term agreements, McLaren’s Zak Brown and Andrea Stella were seen engaging in discussions with Russell during the Australian Grand Prix earlier this year.
Max Verstappen: Aston Martin’s Next Target or Russell’s Replacement at Mercedes?
Aston Martin has emerged as a strong contender for Russell, according to a report from The Times, indicating that they are interested in signing him. Despite currently sitting ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team is expected to become a competitive force in the coming years, especially with a partnership with Honda set to commence in F1 2026.
Aston Martin is developing its first car for the new regulations under the guidance of Adrian Newey, a highly regarded figure in F1 history. Newey recently attended the Monaco Grand Prix to oversee preparations for the upcoming season.
Russell’s roots in F1 trace back to 2017 when he participated in practice sessions for Aston Martin (then Force India). After a successful stint in Formula 2, he made his official debut with Williams in 2019.
Although there have been rumors of a shocking $300 million move for Verstappen by Aston Martin, the team has reiterated its commitment to its current lineup of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, both of whom are under contract until at least the end of 2026. A spokesperson emphasized the team’s resolve to provide its drivers with a consistent and competitive car.
George Russell’s Future and Mercedes’ Plans
Russell’s priority remains a contract extension with Mercedes, with preparations for the new regulations reportedly well underway. Mercedes has remained a dominant force since the last major engine regulation changes in 2014. Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that he and Russell have aligned plans for the future, suggesting that negotiations for a new contract could progress sooner rather than later.
