After five weeks of the NFL season, many teams are facing mounting losses, leading to anxious fan bases and restless owners. This unease often translates into coaches finding themselves under pressure as franchises consider making changes.
While mid-season coaching dismissals rarely lead to significant team improvements, owners sometimes feel compelled to make a change to instill hope. Others may choose to ride out the season before making decisions in the offseason.
As Week 6 approaches, only one team remains winless: the New York Jets, coached by rookie Aaron Glenn. Seven teams have a 1-4 record, including the New Orleans Saints, led by newcomer Kellen Moore, who secured his first win last Sunday. Both Glenn and Moore will likely be given a chance to improve their teams, though not all coaches will be as fortunate.
Some coaches are clearly on the chopping block, and their dismissal appears inevitable. Others are holding onto slim hopes for recovery, while a few unexpected changes may also be on the horizon.
Writing’s on the Wall
Brian Callahan, Tennessee Titans
Callahan managed a surprising victory against the Arizona Cardinals, overcoming a 21-3 deficit to win 22-21. While his team’s performance improved momentarily, significant issues remain. Callahan appears to be struggling to manage the team effectively.
Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins began the season poorly, suffering losses against the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. They showed some improvement against the Buffalo Bills but lost to the Carolina Panthers despite holding a 17-point lead. McDaniel must inspire urgency in his players to avoid further setbacks.
Grasping at Straws
Brian Daboll, New York Giants
Entering this season, Daboll was already in a precarious position after a disappointing run with quarterback Daniel Jones. The Giants have continued to struggle in the NFC East, despite experimenting with rookie Jaxson Dart at quarterback. While Dart helped secure a win, turnover issues have been a significant burden. Daboll’s future largely depends on the team’s performance moving forward.
Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns
Stefanski has faced considerable adversity, notably with injuries to Deshaun Watson. Yet, despite a strong roster, the team has seen repeated struggles and appears on track for another disappointing season. Recent decisions, including starting rookie Dillon Gabriel, signal the urgency for improvement. If results do not come soon, Stefanski may be out of a job.
