Farage’s Bitcoin Conferences: A U-Turn in Focus
As Liz Truss contemplated reversing her mini-budget in October 2022, Nigel Farage addressed economic turmoil on his GB News show. However, he wasn’t in the studio; he was attending a bitcoin conference in Amsterdam at the time.
The Context of Cryptocurrency
Farage kicked off his remarks by noting, “With inflation potentially reaching 20% and growing skepticism about fiat currencies, people are exploring alternatives… Are you ready for bitcoin?”
Policy Plans at the Las Vegas Event
Fast forward to Thursday in Las Vegas, where, in his capacity as an MP, Farage also spoke at a bitcoin conference, organized by the same group. There, he outlined Reform’s policy initiative aimed at establishing London as a global “crypto powerhouse” and proudly announced that the party would be the first to accept donations in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies from qualifying UK donors.
From Metals to Cryptocurrency
Farage’s shift from traditional metals trading to cryptocurrencies seems to have begun during the pandemic. In a video for his investment newsletter, Fortune and Freedom, launched in October 2020, he highlighted how cryptocurrency was becoming a common topic of conversation.
Advocacy and Economic Freedom
In an April 2022 video titled “New Money, New Rules,” Farage revealed his investment in cryptocurrencies, expressing that transitioning into crypto was a sensible choice. He emphasized that “five years ago, cryptocurrencies were pure speculation, but now they’re an essential part of financial planning.”
Linking Political Beliefs to Cryptocurrency
Farage connected his libertarian Euroscepticism to his support for cryptocurrencies, indicating his mission to empower individuals regarding their finances. He further described cryptocurrencies as an “economic insurgency” led by those apprehensive about the influence of large governments, positioning bitcoin as “the ultimate freedom, the ultimate liberty.”
The Farage Coin and Future Aspirations
In June 2024, following his announcement to run in the elections, a meme coin named “$FARAGE” was introduced. Though its value has since plummeted by over 90%, it has promised donations to Reform UK once it reaches certain value thresholds. Farage has expressed his hopes for the coin, framing it within the context of individual freedom, even while advising against investing life savings into it.
