Arrow McLaren Team Principal Tony Kanaan remains optimistic about Nolan Siegel, yet emphasizes that results must align with potential for their partnership to extend beyond 2026.
The upcoming IndyCar Series season marks the conclusion of Siegel’s current multi-year agreement with Arrow McLaren.
Pressure and Performance
“While it is a contract year, there shouldn’t be added pressure because of that,” Kanaan shared with Motorsport.com. “I want to see a driver who pushes hard regardless of the length of their contract. They should compete as if it’s their final race every time.”
Siegel’s Journey So Far
Siegel joined the team on June 17, 2024, taking over the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet after a period of driver changes involving Théo Pourchaire, Callum Ilott, David Malukas, and Alex Palou.
With prior IndyCar experience and after leading the Indy NXT championship, Siegel’s profile was strong, highlighted by an LMP2 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, he has faced challenges, securing only three top-10 finishes in 26 races, with his best result being seventh at Gateway in 2024.
Kanaan’s Confidence in Siegel
“Before the struggles, he was an undeniable talent as a 21-year-old,” Kanaan remarked. “We believed in him and invested in his potential. I fully support him and see his flashes of talent.”
Kanaan has committed to mentoring Siegel through this difficult period, insisting on consistent racing experience and encouraging Siegel to focus solely on driving. Despite two top-10 finishes last season and a championship placing of 22nd, Kanaan remains patient, believing Siegel needs to elevate his performance this year.
Next Steps for Siegel
“He must finish within the top 10 of the championship this season, or his position will be at risk,” Kanaan stated. “It’s not just about placement; it’s about demonstrating consistent performance.” Kanaan is determined to provide Siegel with the necessary support, reliable cars, and opportunities to excel.
Finally, Kanaan acknowledges the competitive nature of the sport yet emphasizes that Siegel’s focus should be on contributing positively to the team and pushing for success. He believes that if Siegel can eliminate distractions and drive with confidence, great achievements can follow.
