Manny Pacquiao’s Return to the Ring
Manny Pacquiao, once a legendary boxing champion, showed signs of decline in his last match nearly four years ago against Cuban fighter Yordenis Ugas, appearing slow and lacking urgency. However, he is now smiling as he prepares to step back into the ring this Saturday to face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas.
At 46 years old, Pacquiao is aware of the cautionary tales of many boxers who struggle to retire gracefully. Despite this, he insists that he is not making a comeback for financial reasons, even though he stands to earn a reported $12.5 million. He claims he is not bored; rather, he simply misses the sport.
“The fire in my heart and mind is still there,” Pacquiao shared in a recent Zoom interview. “Training confirmed that I still have the capability to be a champion.” He aims to set a record by becoming the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history.
Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 knockouts) began contemplating a return last year after an unsuccessful run to reclaim his Philippine Senate seat. He served as a senator from 2016 to 2022 before losing his presidential bid. His desire to fight again was further encouraged when the WBC welcomed his request for a title match.
“My doctor gave me the green light, and my family is supportive because they see my enthusiasm and fitness,” he stated. Although he considers his legacy and the implications of another loss, he believes he is physically equipped to compete effectively. “I can still fight and move with the same vigor I once had,” Pacquiao asserted.
His son, Jimuel, was set to make his professional boxing debut on the undercard but had to withdraw. Pacquiao hopes for a future opportunity for his son, emphasizing the importance of hard work in boxing. “Just training isn’t sufficient, which is why I’ve managed to surprise many throughout my career,” he noted.
With Barrios (29-2-1) as his opponent, Pacquiao feels prepared despite the height difference, stating, “Footwork is crucial.” While a victory could raise Barrios’s profile, Pacquiao wonders if it might also entice Floyd Mayweather Jr. back into the ring for a rematch. However, he remains focused on his upcoming fight, determined to impress fans and inspire the next generation of boxers.
