Nathan Fielder’s Latest Venture on HBO and Max
On HBO and Max, Nathan Fielder is on a mission to eliminate air disasters. However, his show The Rehearsal recently took aim at Paramount.
Paramount’s Content Decisions
In a recent episode of The Rehearsal, Fielder shared his experience with Paramount upon discovering that a 2015 episode of his earlier series Nathan for You had been removed from Paramount+, which is part of Paramount Global.
The Origin of Summit Ice
During the second episode of season three of Nathan for You, titled “Horseback Riding/Man Zone,” Fielder launched a winter-wear brand called Summit Ice. This was a response to a tribute posted by a Vancouver jacket company to Doug Collins, a Holocaust denier. Fielder, a Vancouver native, used the opportunity to create a brand that donates all profits to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, raising millions since 2015.
Summit Ice’s Impact
Fielder described Summit Ice as his “proudest achievement” on The Rehearsal, emphasizing its role in demonstrating how a comedy show can instigate real change. This season, he’s utilizing elaborate setups and significant HBO funding to empower co-pilots in standing up to captains during unsafe situations.
Emailing Paramount
In a twist, Fielder noted that the Summit Ice episode was missing from the streaming service. He reached out to some Paramount contacts, attempting to balance cordiality with urgency in his communication. He referenced the risk to his career, as Paramount was also airing another of his series, The Curse, which had not yet been renewed.
Paramount’s Decision Explained
Fielder learned that the episode was intentionally removed due to “sensitivities” linked to recent events regarding antisemitism. The decision was made by Paramount+ in Germany but soon affected the global platform. He highlighted the troubling trend of eliminating all uncomfortable Jewish content, revealing how the situation evolved after a “standards review.”
Fielder’s Observations
Fielder pointed out the stark imbalance in search results on Paramount+, noting numerous entries for “nazi” and “Hitler” but none for “Judaism.” In a humorous yet critical response, the latest episode featured him exploring a reimagined version of the Paramount Germany office, where he tapped into his original thoughts from those cautious emails.
