The MotoGP™ rider market is buzzing for 2026 and beyond, but there are also significant developments with the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 team, led by Herve Poncharal. During a recent interview at Aragon, he discussed the possibility of collaborating or selling the team entirely to Guenther Steiner, the former Haas Racing F1 team principal. Steiner attended two Grands Prix in 2025—the Americas GP and British GP—and Poncharal confirmed that the interest is genuine.
“Always Open to Investment Opportunities”
Poncharal emphasized the importance of securing his team’s future as new technical regulations come into play from 2027. “As Winston Churchill said, ‘to govern is to foresee,’ and I need to plan ahead,” he explained. While he currently has a solid deal, he acknowledges the need for a backup plan in case the organization changes over the next few years. “It’s always engaging to hear from potential investors; it shows that our company and the MotoGP™ Championship are appealing prospects.”
“Exploring Various Options”
Poncharal mentioned that other investment opportunities are also on the table. “We have several interested parties. It’s challenging to choose among them since they all offer interesting prospects,” he noted. He believes that any decisions regarding the opening of capital or a potential sale should be made by the end of 2025, as 2026 will serve as a transition year for the changes coming in 2027.
“Commitment to KTM Through 2026”
The Frenchman confirmed his commitment to KTM through 2026, stating, “I have a valid and beneficial contract and I’m grateful to Stefan Pierer and Pit Beirer for this partnership.” Current plans include four Red Bull KTMs on the track: Acosta, Binder, Viñales, and Bastianini. Poncharal hopes to secure a deal with KTM for 2027-2031 to continue as the second KTM team, even if it involves different sponsors or colors.
“Pacing in the Transition”
Reflecting on the timeline for finalizing plans, Poncharal shared a personal analogy: “When you fall in love, you wish things would move faster. There are multiple parties involved, and it depends on the chemistry.” He aims to have clarity by the end of 2025, although he couldn’t commit to a specific date for announcements.
“Aiming for Stability in MotoGP”
Poncharal expressed his determination to keep Tech3 thriving within the MotoGP paddock for years to come. “I’ll do everything in my power to ensure that we maintain our structure and people in the championship,” he asserted. His focus remains on creating a competitive package and fostering a strong partnership with KTM as they move forward.
