Chef René Redzepi Steps Down Amid Allegations
Chef René Redzepi has announced his decision to “step away” from Noma, his acclaimed restaurant in Copenhagen, and has resigned from MAD, the nonprofit organization he founded to foster community in the culinary industry.
Resurfaced Allegations and Public Outcry
This decision comes in the wake of numerous resurfaced abuse allegations and a protest that took place outside Noma’s Los Angeles pop-up location in Silver Lake on Wednesday. The controversy intensified following a New York Times report detailing allegations of abuse occurring in the restaurant’s kitchen from 2009 to 2017, which included severe claims of physical and verbal abuse.
Details of the Pop-Up Event
The pop-up event, which charges $1,500 per seat, opened to its first guests on Wednesday afternoon. Outside, a gathering of protestors demanded greater accountability and fair wages for restaurant workers. Allegations had surfaced on Instagram a month prior, initiated by former Noma staffer Jason Ignacio White, who shared them through his account.
Redzepi’s Response
In response, Redzepi issued a public apology on Saturday, stating that “an apology is not enough; I take responsibility for my own actions.” Following earlier assertions that the pop-up would continue as planned, key sponsors withdrew their support, leading to further scrutiny of the event.
Protester Demands
The protest culminated in co-hosting efforts from White and worker advocacy group One Fair Wage, with attendees demanding systemic changes within the hospitality industry. The protestors placed an open letter addressing Redzepi at the estate’s gates, listing demands for accountability and reparations, and urging a response within 24 hours.
Mixed Reactions from Diners
As the pop-up debuted, guests arrived in SUVs, with some attendees expressing awareness of the allegations but choosing to go through with their reservations. One anonymous diner from the hospitality sector shared, “We all know about the dirty secrets in restaurants, and we make this decision,” indicating a complicated relationship with the ongoing issues.
Future Protests Planned
An additional protest organized by White and One Fair Wage is scheduled for Thursday afternoon outside the pop-up’s estate, reflecting ongoing unrest in the industry surrounding these serious allegations.
