The Rockies’ Struggles Continue Against the Mets
For a brief moment, it seemed the Rockies could stand up to the formidable Mets. However, reality soon hit, and the Rockies’ troubled season lingers on. The Mets defeated Colorado 8-2 on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field, marking the Rockies’ seventh consecutive loss and allowing New York to clinch the three-game series (36-22).
Rockies’ Disheartening Record
Currently, the Rockies hold a dismal 9-49 record, which puts them on track for an astounding 25-137 finish—potentially breaking the White Sox’s record of 121 losses from 2024, the worst season in modern baseball history. Additionally, the Rockies have failed to win any of their 19 series this season, trailing into 22 consecutive series losses dating back to September of last year, which sets a major league record.
Manager’s Optimism Amidst Defeats
Despite the grim statistics, manager Warren Schaeffer remains hopeful. When asked by reporters what he would convey to Rockies fans looking for improvement, he responded, “Stick with us. If you closely observe the games, you’ll see progress. Although today wasn’t our best performance, we’ve been playing solid baseball for about ten days. Unfortunately, the wins haven’t followed.”
Initial Hope Fades Quickly
The glimmer of hope came early in the game when Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar hit a solo home run off Mets pitcher Kodai Senga in the first inning. However, Senga quickly asserted control, retiring the next 17 batters and limiting the Rockies to just three hits throughout the game. He ended the day with 6 1/3 innings pitched, allowing only two runs while striking out seven, boasting an impressive ERA of 1.60.
Struggles on the Mound
The Rockies faced difficulties on the mound as well; Antonio Senzatela allowed seven runs on eight hits over four innings against the Mets. This included two back-to-back homers from Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto during a decisive three-run fourth inning. Senzatela’s record now sits at 1-10 for the season, accompanied by a troubling ERA of 7.14, with opponents hitting .377 against him.
Tests Ahead
The Rockies have been swept nine times this season and seek to avoid a tenth sweep in their upcoming game. They have struggled significantly on the road, being outscored 154-70 and only managing to score four runs in five of their 30 road outings.
