INDIAN WELLS — The desert is set to experience record-high temperatures in the 90s this week, matching the intensity of the thrilling matches scheduled for the latter stages of the BNP Paribas Open.
Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will face off against rising 19-year-old Canadian star Victoria Mboko, marking a rematch of their Australian Open encounter earlier this year.
In another quarterfinal, Australian qualifier Talia Gibson will challenge hard-hitting No. 14 Linda Noskova.
Gibson, the 21-year-old Australian on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, has amazed fans by becoming the first qualifier to reach the women’s quarterfinals here since 2015. Additionally, she is the youngest woman to make it to the quarterfinals of her first WTA 1000 event since Elena Rybakina in Wuhan seven years ago.
“I’m speechless,” Gibson exclaimed in a post-match interview. “Every day, my experience is becoming more like a fairytale.”
On Thursday, the quarterfinal matchups are:
No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 10 Victoria Mboko
Head-to-head: 1-0 in favor of Sabalenka, with a previous score of 6-1, 7-6 (1) during their Round of 16 clash at the Australian Open this year.
In a clash of Grand Slam champions, Sabalenka recently defeated No. 16 Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Mboko pulled off an unexpected 6-4, 6-1 victory against No. 6 Amanda Anisimova in just 73 minutes. This marks Mboko’s third WTA 1000 quarterfinal in seven appearances and her first as a Top 10 player.
Mboko reflected on her earlier loss to Sabalenka, stating, “She managed to push me off the court and stay aggressive. I hope to hold my ground better this time.”
No. 14 Linda Noskova vs. qualifier Talia Gibson
Head-to-head: 0-0, making this a brand-new matchup.
Both players face a fantastic opportunity; one will reach the semifinals against the odds. Gibson leads the tournament with 144 winners, while Noskova follows closely. Noskova recently dominated No. 31 Alexander Eala with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory, serving seven aces and breaking Eala five times.
Gibson started the year with two main-draw wins and has now achieved four in just six days at Indian Wells. Briefly outlining her journey:
- First round: Defeated Ann Li 6-3, 7-5.
- Second round: Upset No. 11 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova with the same score.
- Third round: Shocked No. 17 Clara Tauson 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in a 2-hour-43-minute match.
- Fourth round: A strong 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win over No. 7 Jasmine Paolini.
When asked about her performance against Paolini, Gibson admitted, “While I’m confident in my aggressive game, I’m surprised at how well I’ve played consistently.”
