Carlos Santana Homers as Guardians Split Doubleheader with Nationals
WASHINGTON — Carlos Santana didn’t pause to admire the powerful line drive he hit along the right-field line during the second game of the Guardians’ doubleheader against the Nationals on Tuesday night. Soon enough, it found a home in the Nationals’ bullpen.
Santana’s offensive prowess and keen plate discipline were crucial factors that led the Guardians to re-sign him in December with a one-year, $12 million deal. His presence as a seasoned veteran is equally valuable, especially to a clubhouse filled with younger players still navigating their MLB careers.
Ranking second among active players in games played (2,114), Santana trails only Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen (2,158). This wealth of experience benefits teammates who can learn from his exemplary play and dedication.
Having appeared in 34 of the Guardians’ 36 games this season, Santana has demonstrated his ability to contribute offensively and positively influence the game in various ways, even when not performing at his best. He effectively draws walks and takes lengthy at-bats to assist the team’s efforts.
During the eighth inning of Game 2, Santana worked a six-pitch walk against Washington’s Eduardo Salazar. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then progressed to third after reading a groundout well. Ultimately, he scored on another wild pitch by Salazar.
Catcher Austin Hedges praised Santana’s work ethic, stating, “This guy shows up every single day. He wants to play 162 games and he’s absolutely locked in to do his job.” Hedges himself launched his third homer of the season during the doubleheader, emphasizing the winning mentality that Santana fosters among players.
“We’ve been spoiled here in Cleveland for a long time with players like him and José [Ramírez]. The way they approach the game rubs off on everyone, and when the entire team plays with that mindset, we achieve success,” Hedges concluded.
