Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek have expressed concerns regarding the demanding tennis schedule lately.
This week, Swiatek described the WTA calendar as ‘crazy’, stating that players are competing too frequently.
After claiming victory at the Japan Open, Alcaraz concurred with Swiatek, urging the governing bodies to address the crowded schedule, which he feels includes an excessive number of mandatory tournaments.
They are not alone in their opinions, as other prominent athletes from the ATP Tour and WTA Tour have voiced similar thoughts over the years.
Liam Broady Suggests Rule Change for Players with 65-70 Wins
Discussing the issue on Sky Sports, former British player Liam Broady illustrated how the hectic schedule impacts different players.
“It’s challenging for the Tour. While 95% of the top 100 may not struggle with the long season, they play a manageable number of matches and avoid excessive fatigue,” he explained. “However, players like Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, and Aryna Sabalenka are participating in 18 or 19 tournaments a year, racking up over 80 matches, which complicates things.”
Broady proposed a possible solution; allowing elite players with over 65 wins to receive exemptions from certain mandatory competitions. He emphasized that top athletes face more strain amid the intensive schedule and called for a balance from the Tour in managing their workloads.
