LONDON – A Different Fight Week for Joseph Parker
This time around, Joseph Parker finds himself in a unique position as fight day approaches. Instead of eagerly anticipating the end of a grueling training camp, he feels differently this time.
Family Matters
As a father of six, Parker has often had to leave his young family back in New Zealand while training. This distance not only robs him of cherished moments but is intensified by the significant time zone difference.
Constant Worry
Parker expressed the difficulty of being away from his kids, sharing, “These are your kids, you want to see them every day. You’re constantly wondering what they are doing, how they are doing… you can never get that time back.”
Training Camp in Dublin
However, this training camp has been different. With his family accompanying him in Dublin, Parker no longer feels the need to desperately await his flight home. He appreciates having them close enough to ease his mind, saying, “Having the ability to travel with your family is a blessing.”
Performance Boost
Parker’s recent success in the ring is also noteworthy. Since a loss to Joe Joyce in September 2022, he has gone on to win six consecutive matches. He is now on the brink of a title shot after a strong run, feeling more relaxed leading into this pivotal fight against Fabio Wardley.
A New Environment
Parker’s partnership with trainer Andy Lee has further solidified his success in the sport. They have trained together since 2021 and established a strong presence in Dublin, where the support from fans has been overwhelming. Parker remarked, “It’s incredible… to come from the other side of the world and still hear people cheering you on.”
Family Bonding
His children are beginning to understand his profession, often joining him at the gym. Parker cherishes these moments, stating, “Getting to see them in that environment, where I work, is amazing. On Sundays, we all gather for ‘sushi Sunday’ to enjoy family time together.”
Looking Ahead
As he prepares for this fight, Parker is excited for the future and looking forward to a well-deserved holiday after facing Wardley. He humorously adds, “But not Andy – he’s straight into another camp with someone else.”
