Time for the 49ers to Shift Focus to Offense?
After selecting their first four draft picks on defensive players for the first time during the Kyle Shanahan era, the head coach, known for his offensive strategies, is likely to begin searching for offensive talent.
Priority Position: Tackle
Currently, the best candidates for swing tackle on the team are Spencer Burford, a former guard, and Austen Pleasants, a player acquired late last season. Strengthening the tackle position should be a top priority.
Available Players on Day 3
Round 4
T/G Marcus Mbow, Purdue: Mbow has experience as a starter at both right guard and right tackle. He is expected to excel as a guard, making him a candidate for the left guard position opposite third-round pick Dominick Puni.
T/G Chase Lundt, UConn: Lundt is regarded as one of this draft’s stronger run blockers, especially on wide-zone runs, although his 32 5/8-inch arms lead to questions about his suitability at guard.
DT Joshua Farmer, Florida State: Farmer proved to be effective as a two-gapping lineman, recording four sacks and eight tackles for loss last season, showcasing the power and quickness desired for interior linemen.
Round 5
RB Jordan James, Oregon: The 49ers spent considerable time evaluating James before the draft. He rushed for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns last year while also catching 26 passes for 209 yards.
WR Jordan Watkins, Ole Miss: Watkins was a significant big-play threat for Ole Miss, tallying 49 receptions for 906 yards last season and being the only FBS receiver with five plays of 60 yards or more.
Round 7
LB Teddye Buchanan, Cal: Previously a high school quarterback, Buchanan led Cal with 114 tackles and 12 tackles for loss. He engaged with Hall of Fame linebacker Patrick Willis at the 49ers’ pro day, demonstrating his commitment to improving.
C Thomas Perry, Middlebury: Though facing lower-tier college opponents, Perry dominated and held his own at the East-West Shrine game, projecting as a center at the NFL level after demonstrating skill as a college guard.
