Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, believes George Russell ranks among the top three drivers in Formula 1, following his remarkable performance at the start of the 2025 season.
Russell has opened the new season with consecutive podium finishes in Australia and China, now trailing championship leader Lando Norris by just nine points.
With Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari and Kimi Antonelli stepping in as a rookie, Russell has emerged as the team’s leading driver.
During the Chinese Grand Prix, after starting on the front row and nearly overtaking Norris due to a brake complication, Wolff expressed admiration for Russell’s performance, stating, “While I don’t usually give a 10 out of 10, considering the conditions for George in China, it deserves a perfect score.”
Wolff praised Russell for maximizing the car’s potential, the tire strategy, and delivering an exceptional drive. He commented on the attention surrounding Hamilton and the young Antonelli, mentioning that Russell’s talent is often overlooked. “If I were to name the top three drivers, George is unquestionably among them, possibly even in the top two and perhaps on a path to being the best,” Wolff added.
Russell’s Competitive Spirit
Russell has playfully taunted Norris in the media, suggesting he is the title contender, aiming to create pressure on his fellow Briton. He remarked in Australia that McLaren could start gearing up for 2026, and before the Chinese event, he implied that McLaren holds a larger advantage over other competitors than Red Bull did in their dominant 2023 season.
Oscar Piastri dismissed Russell’s comments as “far-fetched,” but Wolff supported his driver, stating, “He is stirring things up a bit more. Based on Melbourne, that claim was valid.” He further noted the need for analysis after multiple races, mentioning the fluctuations in performance from Ferrari and the need for consistency in evaluation between exuberance and disappointment.
Future Contract Discussions
Russell is among the notable drivers without a contract for 2026. Although Wolff previously mentioned the intricate deals for Russell and Antonelli, suggesting options for extension, he emphasized Russell’s integral role at Mercedes. “George is a Mercedes driver, and we’re proud to have him on the team. It’s essential to focus on his development,” said Wolff after the race in Shanghai.
