Trump Hosts UK Prime Minister Starmer at Scottish Golf Course
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — On Monday, President Donald Trump welcomed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to his luxurious golf course in Scotland. Their discussions ranged from the escalating food crisis in Gaza and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine to tariff rates, interspersed with Trump’s boasts about the opulence of his property.
The two leaders appeared at ease with each other, resembling a relaxed meeting in the Oval Office. Trump often emphasized the significance of the Turnberry course to his family business.
Upon the arrival of Starmer and his wife, Victoria, at Trump Turnberry, the former president took time to engage with them, highlighting notable sites around the property.
Starmer aimed to persuade the United States to take a more significant role in addressing what he termed a “desperate situation” in Gaza, where reports of starvation are increasing amid the Israel-Hamas war.
Initially, Trump expressed frustration about the U.S. not receiving enough credit for previous food aid efforts. However, he changed his stance when questioned by reporters about images depicting malnourished children in Gaza. When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments on concerns over mass starvation, Trump conceded that the visuals indicated otherwise, stating, “those children look very hungry.”
Starmer was much more direct in his response, asserting, “I think people in Britain are revolted at seeing what they are seeing on their screens.” The discussion then shifted, with Trump suggesting that Israel held significant responsibility for the current situation and asserting his intention to urge Netanyahu to ensure food deliveries to Gaza.
Following the meeting, Starmer joined Trump on Air Force One to visit a second golf course owned by the Trump family near Aberdeen. Demonstrators protested in nearby Balmedie, criticizing Trump’s influence and decisions, while Starmer, despite not being a golfer, participated in discussions about the significant role golf plays in geopolitics. In summary, Trump also continued to advocate for trade agreements and addressed issues related to tariffs, including a proposal regarding Scotch whisky.
