Apple is set to hold its latest hardware event on September 9 at 10 a.m. PT, where it is anticipated to unveil the iPhone 17 series alongside updates to the Apple Watch and AirPods.
As usual, there are numerous speculations, including larger displays and enhanced cameras for the iPhone 17 models, plus the potential launch of an ultra-slim iPhone Air to replace the Plus variant. Moreover, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicates that this marks the beginning of three years of significant design changes for the iPhone, with a foldable model expected in 2026.
iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 is anticipated to have a substantial redesign to resemble the Pro models more closely. It may sport a slightly larger 6.3-inch display, an increase of 0.2 inches over the iPhone 16, along with a 120 Hz refresh rate, significantly boosting the current 60 Hz. Additionally, it’s rumored to include a 24-megapixel front camera.
New color options may include shades like purple and green. Reportedly, the Pro models will get distinct upgrades, including a rear camera layout resembling a rectangular bar running across the phone. Various components like the flash and microphone would be positioned toward the right side, while the Apple logo is said to be centrally placed for design appeal.
The iPhone 17 Pro might also see a material shift, potentially replacing the titanium bezel with aluminum to lower costs and improve weight. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may have minor enhancements, with the most notable being a slightly thicker profile to house a larger battery—a welcome upgrade.
iPhone Air
Among the most talked-about rumors is the possibility of Apple’s thinnest phone yet, the iPhone Air, which could take the place of the iPhone Plus. This device is rumored to be just 5.5 mm thick, making it about 0.08 inches slimmer than current models and will feature a 6.6-inch display. This move is seen as Apple’s answer to the ongoing trend toward thinner devices.
While the sleek design is appealing, compromises may include a single rear camera and potentially limited space for additional features like speakers, relying on the top earpiece for sound. Concerns about battery performance exist due to its slim physique, with some expecting an optional battery case to be available for purchase.
Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3
After a two-year hiatus, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is rumored to undergo extensive changes, possibly featuring faster charging, 5G support, and enhanced connectivity options. A larger display is also on the horizon. Additionally, exciting new health features like blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection may debut, although their rollout may need further adjustments, according to Mark Gurman.
The third iteration of the Apple Watch SE is not expected to have major enhancements besides a possibly larger display. Reports suggest a plastic model may be introduced. Expected price points for the watches are $250 for the SE 3, $400 for the Series 11, and about $800 for the Ultra 3.
AirPods Pro 3
Having launched the AirPods Pro 2 in 2022, Apple is poised for an upgrade with the upcoming AirPods Pro 3. Speculations include a sleeker design with touch controls, smaller earbuds, and a slimmer case. A rumor also suggests the absence of a pairing button, instead allowing pairing through touch on the case itself.
Furthermore, the introduction of the H3 chip is expected to enhance both active noise cancellation and adaptive audio functionality.
