Team USA concluded an impressive first day of competition at the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England, with all five competitors securing victories. The United States has advanced boxers in five men’s weight classes as they head into day two, aiming to continue their successful momentum with three additional boxers set to compete. There are still nine days of boxing remaining at the inaugural World Boxing Championships held at M&S Bank Arena.
Zamora Leads the Charge
Orlando Zamora kicked off the USA’s winning streak with a clear 4-1 victory over Zafarbek Kamilov from the Kyrgyz Republic in the 55-kilogram division. Displaying impeccable defensive skills, Zamora expertly capitalized on his opponent’s overextensions, securing the win amid cheers from his fans and teammates.
Camacho’s Thrilling Comeback
Rene Camacho brought excitement to his 60-kilogram bout against Croatia’s Filip Poturovic, coming from behind after trailing on the scorecards. Following a slow start, the Houston native fought back to narrow his score deficit to 3-2, showcasing impressive reach and power, ultimately winning by a narrow 3-2 decision in the final round.
Flowers Dominates the Ring
Carlos Flowers (Dover, Del.) continued Team USA’s success with a convincing 4-1 triumph over Sarkhan Aliyev from Azerbaijan. Quickly establishing dominance, Flowers forced his opponent into defensive mode, ultimately relying on his tactical acumen to exhaust Aliyev throughout the match.
Ordonez Claims First International Victory
Ramon Ordonez (Newark, N.J.) faced off against Kevin Davila from Mexico to open the second session. Utilizing a strong jab and effective footwork, Ordonez managed to evade his opponent’s attacks, clinching a unanimous decision for his first international win as part of Team USA.
Georges Caps Off a Perfect Day
Malachi Georges (Teaneck, N.J.) rounded out the flawless day for Team USA by commanding his 90-kilogram matchup against Estonia’s Stiven Aas. Displaying remarkable athleticism and confidence, Georges utilized his jab for consistent control and landed powerful left-handed blows, causing significant damage and earning a unanimous decision.
Upcoming Competitions
Looking ahead to day two, Team USA will feature three more boxers in action, beginning with Alyssa Mendoza in the 57-kilogram division against Colombia’s Valeria Mendoza at approximately 6:15 a.m. ET in Ring B. Morelle McCane will follow in the 65-kilogram bracket against England’s Sacha Hickey around 7 a.m. ET. Kelvin Watts will compete later in the day in the super heavyweight category against Lithuania’s Algirdas Baniulis, starting at about 3:30 p.m. ET.
