Valverde’s Hat-Trick Leads Real Madrid to Victory
Federico Valverde’s stunning first-half hat-trick propelled Real Madrid to an impressive 3-0 win against Manchester City, leaving the latter with a significant challenge to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Despite missing key players such as Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo, Real Madrid entered the match as underdogs. However, they delivered a dominant performance in the first half, with Valverde shining brightly at the Bernabeu.
Thibaut Courtois initiated the attack with a long pass that Valverde expertly controlled before taking on Gianluigi Donnarumma. Valverde rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home from a challenging angle, opening the scoring in the 20th minute.
The goal came somewhat unexpectedly after a strong start from City, but Real Madrid quickly asserted control as Valverde struck again just seven minutes later, finishing a flicked pass from Vinicius Jnr beyond Donnarumma.
Valverde continued to impress with his performance, netting his third and final goal of the night with a remarkable flick inside the penalty area before firing past the keeper just before halftime (42). This achievement marked his first career hat-trick and left the home side ecstatic.
Following Real Madrid’s exceptional first half, the odds for Manchester City to win the Champions League shifted from 9/1 to 33/1. City could have fallen further behind if not for Donnarumma, who made crucial saves to deny Brahim Diaz shortly after the break.
Despite the setback, Guardiola remained optimistic. Admitting their chances are slim, he stated, “Now, not much, but I’m not a guy to say we’re not going to try.” The challenge will be steep in the return leg at the Etihad, but the mindset remains focused on recovery and improvement.
