Giants’ Disappointing Season Opener Against Commanders
LANDOVER, Md. — After an eight-month hiatus, the Giants faced off in their 18th game of the forgettable 2024 season, and the outcome was just as disappointing as previous ones.
Sunday was expected to usher in a new season and a fresh era, complete with positive energy and an enhanced roster. However, fans were left deceived as they witnessed the Giants suffer a 21-6 defeat against the Commanders.
Head Coach’s Response
“It’s a new season,” said head coach Brian Daboll, “but it does hurt. No question about that.” Despite hopes of a fresh start, the offense only managed to accumulate 231 yards and convert 4-of-16 on third downs, while struggling to find the end zone, relying solely on field goals from Graham Gano.
Offensive Struggles
The absence of left tackle Andrew Thomas severely affected the team’s blocking, leaving quarterback Russell Wilson under pressure, getting hit eight times. Fill-in starter James Hudson III certainly wasn’t the only one at fault. The defense also failed to generate any turnovers and got overrun by the run game.
Looking Ahead
Facing an urgent must-win situation against the Cowboys next, the Giants need to rectify ongoing issues. “My confidence isn’t wavering from one game,” stated player Brian Burns, who recorded two sacks. “It’s just one game. We can’t let this turn into two.”
Wilson’s Performance
Wilson’s first game with the Giants didn’t demonstrate the offensive resurgence many anticipated. Despite returning 10 of 11 starters from last season, the team still struggled, with Wilson completing just 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards. The Giants failed to convert any of their 13 red-zone plays into a touchdown.
Missed Opportunities
The Giants managed just six points, despite having multiple opportunities, leaving 11 points on the field. Daboll recognized the shortcomings, stating, “Six points, it’s tough to win a game.” Their defensive performance allowed 220 rushing yards against the Commanders, which stifled their chances to shine.
A Call for Improvement
With the team having been outscored 89-12 in their last three touchdown-less season openers, the pressure is mounting. Player Dexter Lawrence II emphasized the need for improvement, especially in tackling. “We have to get ready to play Dallas and beat them,” he insisted, stressing the importance of not making it two losses in a row.
